What Can a Good Night’s Sleep Do For You?

Why is sleep so important?

Sleep is a hot topic in the health and fitness world these days and for good reason. It is a key recovery tool alongside nutrition, working out, and mindset work. We can spend hours upon hours in the gym or prepping in the kitchen and not fully benefit from the work we put in if we cannot get quality sleep at night.

Recovery is vital for your health and fitness. Here are a few of the many benefits to a proper night’s sleep:

  • Blood pressure drops
  • Blood supply to muscles increases
  • Tissue growth and repair occurs
  • Energy is restored
  • Hormones are released, such as growth hormone, essential for growth and development, including muscle development
  • Provides energy to the brain and body
  • Supports daytime performance

Sleep helps build a healthy immune system and can also balance our appetites by helping to regulate levels of the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which play a role in our feelings of hunger and fullness. So when we’re sleep-deprived, we may feel the need to eat more, which can lead to weight gain (SleepFoundation.org, 2020)

So now what?

Knowing all this can become stressful when you continually try to get a good night’s rest but still are unable to. There are so many different strategies and supplements that advertise helping you get a good night’s sleep. The problem with this is that they are usually one dimensional, “Do this and achieve this”. As easy as that. However, it isn’t often that simple. You are then left feeling lost and hopeless in the attempt to reach that seemingly impossible deep sleep.

Most chronic problems will require chronic habits. Sleep is no different. The media tends to focus on  the “quick fix”. Most of the time, it will not be a quick fix.  It most likely has been an accumulation of some poor habits over time that are multifaceted.

I would like to help you if you are having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. For well over a year I was averaging 3-4 hours of sleep per night. I slowly developed a habit-based routine that now has enabled me to consistently get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. The duration of the program is approximately one month.  I would like to help coach people to get a good night’s rest because I know from experience that an inability to sleep well can be one of the most frustrating things in life. I am not a medical professional and I will not prescribe or suggest anything that is outside my scope as a health and fitness coach. I will simply just be coaching you through some key habits to fight your chronic sleep issue.
