In order to grow, you sometimes need to go through uncomfortable things. I am sure we are all aware that most CrossFit workouts are pretty tough and sometimes require you to get a little uncomfortable. I don’t know how many times I have been asked the question, “Does it get any easier?”. It doesn’t really matter how fit or how long you have been doing CrossFit, it is always hard. The fitter you get and the more you grow, the faster and harder you can push. Which means it still feels as hard as day one. Believe it or not though, this is a good thing.
To grow, get out of your comfort zone
If you constantly seek comfort in your life or in the gym, you are inhibiting yourself from growing and enjoying the payout of that new found growth. If you have ever had to find your 20 rep max back squat, you know what being uncomfortable feels like. Can you imagine what is happening inside your body after this? Assuming you recover well, the adaptations and mental growth you will experience from this will be big! If you want to experience this growth, you have to be willing to go through some discomfort. You are more than welcome to stay within your comfort zone, just know that you won’t get the results you hoped for by doing that.
Pursuing discomfort helps you build up resilience. This resilience enables you to grow that much more. Resilient people still experience discomfort, but they are so attached to WHY they do what they do, that they push through and actually seek experiences that will help them grow and become better versions of themselves. Having a strong reason why you do what you do is imperative to your ability to go through tough growing experiences.
Find a strong ‘why’
Find your why and this will help you push through hard situations and workouts that provide positive growth. If your why is that you want to be able to go on a hiking trip with your grandkids, that is going to be way more impactful than working out so that you can lose 10 lbs. A strong why keeps you in alignment with that end goal and you will then begin to seek out uncomfortable experiences in order to live into that future state.
By no means am I saying that you need to smash yourself in a workout every single day. Sometimes rest is just as important (and sometimes rest is equally uncomfortable). You need to find some quiet and rest to let all your hard work settle in and develop you as a person. Know the difference between unnecessary and impactful discomfort.
Get comfortable being uncomfortable
We are living in a world that prioritizes comfort over growth. Show those around you the byproduct of seaking discomfort. I am sure one day we will find a machine that can get us fit by just sitting, but would that really be fulfilling? One of the most fulfilling things in life is going through growing experiences that elicit a new you. Spiritually, physically, and mentally. Pursue environments, relationships, and workouts that challenge you, so that you too can experience positive growth.
